Global Change "Electronic" Term Paper

All students will develop a research topic over the course of the semester, present it to the class, and publish it as a site on the internet. The topics will focus on specifc aspects presented in the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report. The IPCC Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) is organized into three working groups:

I Physical Science

II Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability

III Mitigation of Climate Change

See also some of the previous assessments and special reports for information.

First, I would like you to select a group (hopefully we will get near even numbers in each - about 5).  I would then like you to meet with the other group members and review the information presented in each of the reports.  Then decide how you are going to divide the information among group members to present an overview of the topic to the class.  You don't have to cover all aspects of the report.  There will be some overlap with information presented in lecture for the Physical Science group so I will direct you to topics that will not be covered completely in class.

The term paper will be worth a total of 70 points broken down as follows:

35 points for the paper (Web site)

35 points for the presentation (Powerpoint).

A sign-up sheet will be distributed to schedule your presentation which will be given during the last few weeks of classes. Electronic term papers are due by the day of classes.. You can submit your term paper simply by sending me the web address. A sign-up sheet will be distributed for oral presentations.

PRESENTATIONS

You will learn how to use Microsoft Powerpoint for your presentation in lab.  Powerpoint slides should inlclude graphics, texts, and an outline (bullets) of the points you want to make.  Keep the text to a minimum and avoid reading off the slide. Presentations will be limited to 15 minutes per student (including questions).

You will evaluate one another on your presentations using the following evaluation form

Powerpoint Presentations will be posted on the class web site. You will be responsible for the presentational material on the 3rd hourly exam.

CREATING WEB PAGES

You will be shown how to create your web pages in lab.  The information on the Web page will be similar to the Powerpoint Presentation but will include elaboration on the points made in your presentation in full sentences, etc.

Sources such as government agencies, trade and professional associations, major universities, or research centers will have more reliable information than the homepages of hobbyists dabbling in the subject area.
